Tennis Courts - French Clay
A French clay court is one of the four different types of tennis courts that we provide. These types of Clay courts are made of either crushed stone, brick or shale.
Red Clay courts or French clay tennis courts are far more common in continental Europe and Latin America than in the United States, Canada or Britain. In the United States, the most common kind of clay court is the American Clay court.
Almost all red "clay" courts are made not of natural clay but of crushed brick that is packed to make the court.
This type of surface does not absorb water easily and is the most common in Europe and Latin America. The French Open is played on red clay courts, hence the name "French Clay".
The concept originated in the UK. A crushed brick surface was introduced by a British firm in 1909, to address the drainage problem of the clay surface. These court surfaces began spreading through Europe beginning in the 1920s.
